Expressions Revealed
By Saverpierre Maggio

About Saverpierre Maggio
Beginning his artistic journey in a painterly style, Saverpierre often found that his completed works felt unresolved. This sense of incompleteness troubled him, as the brushstrokes and textures frequently echoed the styles of other artists. When stepping back to assess his work, he would notice that the brushstrokes and textures were distractions and noise. Â
"Each time I finished a piece I would struggle with leaving the artwork on the easel, I felt it remained unfinished", Saverpierre admits. To resolve this tension, he developed a technique of scraping away as many brushstrokes as possible. He believes that brushstrokes and the use of texture do not solely belong to the artist; rather, they belong to influences both external and internal factors including past and present painters. He finds this problematic. Â
 He explains, Â
"We are bombarded with images and messages that are not our own, and these seep into our dialogue with the world around us. It is becoming more difficult to express oneself without sounding or looking like someone else. These influences do not only act as barriers to expression as we navigate through our daily engagements, but they also act as barriers to freedom in painting. Therefore, one way to achieve freedom in painting is to minimize the effect of these influences. This should not be seen as a defeat of artistic expression. By removing brushstrokes, the painterly style and what comes with it is restrained from dominating the work. What remains is a more sincere reflection of my original intention and a resolved piece of work." Â
In other words, the process of scraping preserves the essence of his vision while eliminating elements that he feels derivative. In this way, the resultant works are both visually engaging and personally meaningful. When a work is considered completed there may still exist traces of brushstrokes and texture, however the work according to Saverpierre, "is a liberated painting."Â
Saverpierre possesses a diverse academic background, holding bachelor's and master's degrees in political science, education, and law, as well as a PhD in research methods and statistics.Â
